Teachers' Notes for Mini-Course 1: Preschool–Grade 2

October 21, 2020

Learning Objectives

  • Learn and/or review the English alphabet (lowercase and uppercase) and the numbers 1–10.
  • Learn and/or review introductory English vocabulary. Themes include colors, shapes, food, animals, birthdays, school, and family.
  • Learn and practice the Be verb and the simple present tense.
  • Listen to easy stories and follow along.

Teachers' Notes

Log in to ESL Library and go to Folders (in the Class Prep drop-down menu). Toggle to ESL Library Folders. You will find a starter course of lessons and resources suitable for Preschool–Grade 2.

Introductory Resources

At the beginning of the course, you will find a few introductory resources:

Course Content

Following the introductory resources, you will find a list of lessons, flashcards, and other worksheets. This is a guideline for teachers who need help getting started for the first time with students in this age group. You can adapt the order and content based on your students’ needs and the length of your course. These materials are in a suggested order, but you do not need to follow this order exactly or use all of these lessons.

Be sure to adapt ready-made courses to meet the level and needs of your students. Choose additional or alternative lessons from the suggested sections below (under the More Content heading). When looking for additional materials to teach for this age group, you will likely only use the level filters marked Lit, Pre Beg, and Beg. Here is an Equivalency Scale that may be useful.

For this age group and level, you will rely heavily on flashcards from the Flashcard Library. We've included some ready-made sets for you in the folder. You can also create and broadcast your own digital flashcard sets using our Flashcard Player.

Some of the suggested lessons have digital tasks so that you can teach your students online or assign digital homework. If you need help using the digital platform, visit our Help Docs.

If you are only able to teach online at this time and you want to use a lesson that is currently only available as a PDF, you can download the Student PDF and email it to your student(s) or you can open it on a shared screen while you teach an online lesson.

More Content for Preschool–Grade 2

The ESL Library publishing team is busy working on Mini-Course 2 and 3 for this age group. Until these become available, you can build your own courses using the following suggestions:

Language Targets: simple present / past / future tenses, personal / possessive / indefinite pronouns, conjunctions, determiners, capitalizing proper nouns, frequently used irregular plurals, basic punctuation (period / comma / apostrophe)

Functions: identify illustrations, describe familiar people / places / things, ask and answer questions about key details, describe characters / settings / main events, compare and contrast experiences, tell a story, recount a story, read and write simple sentences

Themes: holidays, transportation, weather, food, animals, community, time, body

Here are some suggested ESL Library sections for teaching very young learners. We ask that you always preview the content for age appropriateness.

I was wondering if the content on this site can be used to teach on online platforms such as Outschool? Please advise.

Hi there Lina,

I'm not specifically familiar with Outschool, but as long as you are an active paid subscriber of ESL Library and are using the teaching materials to teach your own students, then you can use our materials on most teaching platforms. (I will add the caveat that it is against our Terms of Use to post pre-recorded lessons using our materials on platforms such as YouTube. If you're unsure about your specific teaching platform/situation, send us an email at hello@esllibrary.com and someone from our team can take a more in-depth look and see what we recommend for you. We're friendly, I promise!)

I will say that if you're teaching on a live virtual platform (such as Google Meet, Zoom, Facebook Chat, Skype -- and it looks like Outschool maybe in this category?) there are no issues! Similarly, you can use our Assignment Manager to teach via most asynchronous platforms (such as Google Classroom, Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, etc.)

Hope that helps clarify a bit. And again, if you have lingering questions, shoot us an email and we're happy to help!
