Introducing ESL Library's Flashcard Player

April 17, 2020

Update: Already familiar with our Flashcard Player? See v.2 updates in the second demo below.

Broadcast Digital Flashcards

We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of our new Flashcard Player. This digital tool allows teachers to present their own custom-made flashcard sets on a shared screen in a live class. Whether you’re teaching online or heading back to the classroom, we know you’re going to love ESL Library’s new addition (available for Standard and Plus plan members).

Flashcard Player Features (v.2)

The updated version (v.2) of our Flashcard Player allows teachers to:

  • launch a saved/edited flashcard set from My Folders (go to: Class Prep → My Folders → Flashcard Folders)
  • show each image from the set to elicit vocabulary (image only)
  • click on an image to reveal the text (image + text)
  • click on the text to hide the image (text only)
  • advance to the next image or go back
  • launch from Manage flashcards page after saving a set
  • view a sidebar menu
  • skip to a flashcard from sidebar menu
  • rename a flashcard from sidebar menu
  • remove a flashcard from sidebar menu (for the presentation only)
  • choose the default presentation style
  • choose the presentation font style (Standard or Literacy)

Coming Soon

Our designers and engineers are currently working on a few more advanced features for our Flashcard Player. In upcoming versions, you will be able to:

  • search for and add flashcards from a presentation menu
  • play audio for each word (see our new Picture Dictionary task)

Stay tuned!

This is a nice feature. I would also love the ability to assign sets of flashcards for students to review. Right now, I'm using Quizlet to do that but I would love to be able to do it from ESL Library.

Hi, Melissa. This will be the next step after v.3 is ready! In the meantime, you can assign the Image Match tasks within a lesson. The Flashcard Player will allow you to present and teach the words and the Image Match allows students to practice the words.

Kathy C.(Teacher)

Thanks for creating the digital flash card player. Can it only be used to “broadcast” with a class or can they be assigned to students who are in a class?
Thanks!

Hi Kathy. The Flashcard Player is currently just a presentation tool for teachers in a live class (online or face-to-face) with a shared screen. We will be building a new task type that allows you to assign a flashcard set of images for homework. Currently, you can only assign the Image Match task.

Stephanie P.(Teacher)

Hello, I would love to see the option of clicking on the word and it being pronounced for the student.

Hi Stephanie. This is definitely coming in a future version! Stay tuned.

Michael T.(Teacher)

This is fantastic! I know you are working on additional features for flashcards and I was wondering if audio is one of them. It would be a nice feature for online students when practicing new vocabulary for homework at their own pace.
Thanks again for all your hard work as well as accommodating teachers with the digital platform.
All the best to you and yours during this challenging time.
Cheers
Michael^^

Hi Michael. Thanks for checking in! Yes, audio is coming in a future version.

Jenny K.(Teacher)

Great thank you! I would also LOVE to assign (so the material can be "taught" to students who can't be on the live session, and can be reviewed by them). Any idea on the timeline for that?

Thanks for being so amazingly accommodating to our situation of having to teach our students from home. Your website is superb. Each added feature is much appreciated.

Thanks so much for the sweet words, Joyce! I have passed them on to our team.

Roberta L.(Teacher)

I would love for the flashcards to also be randomly arranged. Thank you for doing this!

Tara Benwell(Author)

When we add the menu, you will be able to easily rearrange the flashcards during or before a presentation. We'll eventually add some quiz features, and that's where "random" might come in! Thanks for your request!

BTW , do you think the flashcards should be randomly presented when you can eventually assign a set to students? Or do you think ESL Library or the teacher should preset the order?

Tina N.(Teacher)

Hi. This is great! Very user friendly. I was wondering if there could be a font option. As a teacher of ESL students the lower case"g" and "a" can pose a problem for early readers. Thanks so much for this addition!

Hi, Tina! Yes, there will be a "normal" and "literacy" font option in the menu. Coming soon!

I am so grateful to esllibrary as a digital resource for my classes with CLBs 1-6 during the Coronavirus .

We're very happy to hear that!

    Hi,

I would love to see something where my students don't have to sign into the sight. They are very low level literacy and really at this point don't have the ability to use this sight if they have to sign in. I love the idea and will make up some sets for in class use when we eventually return to classes.

Hi Teresa! Your students don't have to sign up or log in for the Flashcard Player. You launch the images during a live class using the broadcast feature: https://ellii.com/blog/launch-or-preview-digital-tasks If you want students to do tasks for homework, they do need an account. They don't need an email. We are working on making the sign up/log-in even more user-friendly.

    Christine F.(Teacher)

This is a good player. But there are a lot pictures that an instructor would like to use that are different from the stock ones here. It would be great, if we can also add our own pictures.

Hi Christine. Thanks for your request. At this time, ESL Library's digital platform does not allow you to upload your own content. Let us know if you need a flashcard set that we don't have. Thanks!

    Elizabeth J.(Teacher)

Hi, My students and I really enjoy ESL Library and I can't begin to tell you how much we use it since you went digital and as a part of our distance learning. I am really hoping ESL Library can design a writing section/space on the platform where students can access, complete and submit writing as per the teacher's rubric, just a blank space attached to each digital lesson where I can assign a writing task for the students and provide written feedback.

Excited to see what's coming, thank you for all the work you guys have done.It has certainly cut down on our prep time:)

Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for your request. Unfortunately, we do not have a task type where teachers can create their own content yet. Our open-ended question task does allow a student to write a written response to a question/assessment and the teacher can leave feedback. However, the content is provided by the ESL Library publishing team. If you have a suggestion for improving or including an assessment in a lesson, feel free to let us know!

    Cindy S.(Teacher)

Is there a way to create your own flashcards? I'm teaching civics and want to have a question on one side and the answer on the other side

    Reply to Comment

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi Cindy. You can edit the default word to any text you want (up to 80 characters). So, you can create your own questions to go with the images. You would need to use images we have in the flashcard library, however. You can't upload your own images. For the Flashcard Player, the image will appear without text by default. Then when you click on the image, the text appears. If you want to print flashcards you can choose printer settings so that the text appears on the back of the card.

    Teresa K.(Teacher)

    Thanks. I will try it.

This comment is not related to Flashcard Player but to your "My Folders". I would like to be able to delete assignments that have already been completed, without deleting the whole folder. Thanks for doing an amazing job during the COVID-19 crisis, in adapting to our challenges and needs. Well done indeed!

    Hi Paola,

Thank you for the fun suggestion! We have some new flashcard features coming later this year. I will pass your idea along to our development team so they see if they can add it to our roadmap :)

    Ali A.(Teacher)

Hi! It would be nice to have a screen where I can show all the flashcards together!

Hi Ali, that's a great idea! Thanks for letting us know what features would be useful for you. I'll pass this idea along to our team!

    Yi Q.(Teacher)

I dream to play a word game like at Duckster's using customized flashcard set. Could you please add some rewards in the flash player?

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi there!

Thanks for the great suggestion. Our digital Flashcard Player is pretty new, but we definitely have more that we plan to do with it.

I've added your suggestion to our list so we can keep it in mind as we develop more interactive flashcard activities going forward. You're not the only one making similar suggestions, so I hope we'll be able to have features like this coming in the future!

    Linda K.(Teacher)

The flashcard player looks great! I wonder if you will provide for teachers to customize flashcards for use on the player. If I want my students to practice new vocabulary that they encountered in an article that we read, would I be able to create customized flashcards -- words or phrases that don't neatly fit into one of your sets? That would be really helpful!

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Linda,

You can indeed create custom flashcard sets! (At the moment you can only use this feature during a "live" synchronous lesson, but we are working to add a feature so they can also be assigned as homework as our Picture Dictionary pre-made flashcard sets can.)

With custom flashcard sets, you can grab flashcards from any category, edit the text (including using simpler/more specific vocabulary or another language), rearrange the order of the flashcards, and decide if the picture or text should show first. It's pretty awesome!

You can see an example of creating custom flashcard sets at 1:04:15 mark of our webinar here: https://youtu.be/2EO63XhvAV0?t=3856

    Nicole D.(Teacher)

It would be really helpful if the flashcadr player had this feature:
    - the student clicks on an image to reveal the text (image + text) in their native language. In other words, allowing the teacher to edit in the students native language and it appearing separate from the English text. That would be very helpful to students at the literacy level

    Lei Kayanuma(Author)

    Hello Nicole,

That is a great idea, and you can actually do this as our flashcards are editable! Before you save your flashcard set, you can click on the text to edit and type in the text using any language you or your students would like!
