FAQs for Students Using Ellii

March 27, 2020

To use Ellii as a student, your teacher must first invite you to a class. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) from students like you.

1. I'm new! How do I sign up with an email invitation?

Step #1

Go to your email inbox. Open your teacher’s invitation. Click Join Now.

Step #2

This will take you to ellii.com/students.

Step #3

Click the green box that says "Create an Account. I am new!"

Create an Account button

Step #4

Fill out the form. Type your email address or create a username (don’t forget it). Is your username taken? (You didn't sign up already did you?) Choose a different username. Add a password. Don't forget it! Make sure your form has no errors (red boxes). Agree to the terms. Then click Create Student Account.

Step #5

Choose an avatar. Click Start Learning.

2. I'm new! My teacher gave me an invitation code. How do I sign up?

Step #1

Go to ellii.com/students.

Step #2

In the top right corner, choose New to Ellii? Create an Account.

Step #3

Fill out the form. Type the code your teacher gave you. Then fill out the rest of the form. See Step #4 and #5 above.

3. I have an account. How do I log in?

Step #1

Go to ellii.com/students.

Step #2

Enter your username or email address and password. (Use the one you used last time.)

Step #3

Click Log In.

Step #4

You are now on your Student Dashboard.

Important

Use this method every time you log in. Do not use your invitation email again.

4. How do I join my teacher’s class?

Your teacher will put you in a class. Ellii does not have a video platform for online classes. Ellii has the content and activities for class and homework. Use email or text to ask your teacher how you are going to meet online. Your teacher may choose a video platform such as Zoom or Google Hangouts.

In a video chat, your teacher can share his/her screen. You can do some Ellii tasks together. This tool is called Broadcast. Your teacher can also send you tasks to do for homework. You can do them on your mobile device, tablet, or computer and then send them to your teacher.

5. How do I see my homework?

Step #1

Log in at ellii.com/students.

Step #2

Enter your Username and Password.

Step #3

You are now on your Student Dashboard. This is where your Assignments are.

Step #4

Look at the To Do list. Do you see a lesson with a bell? This is your new homework.

Look at the Due Date. Do your homework before this day and time. (It is a good idea to click on the lesson to see how many tasks your teacher assigned.)

6. How do I do my homework?

Step #1

Log in at ellii.com/students.

Step #2

Click on the lesson in your To Do list.

Step #3

Choose a task you haven’t done yet (e.g., Listen & Type).

Step #4

Click Start.

Step #5

Read the instructions.

Step #6

Start the task.

Step #7

Do the task. Click the arrow at the bottom of your screen to go to the next question.

Step #8

Submit your answers.

Your teacher will be able to see your answers after you submit them. You can also try a task again! For some tasks, you can even fix your answers.

7. How do I see my results?

Step #1

After you finish each task, click I’m Finished or Submit (or advance the arrow).

Step #2

Click Review Answers.

Tasks with one correct answer (e.g., True or False) will show your results right away. Some tasks don’t have results (e.g., Read & Listen). Your teacher will need to check some of your written tasks.

Step #3

Click Try Again to redo the task.

Tip #1

Your teacher will see your results and attempts (the number of times you tried a task). Your teacher will also see how much time you spent on each task. This is how your homework looks for your teacher. When your teacher clicks View Results, he or she sees your answers.

Tip #2

For some written answers, your teacher can send you feedback about your ESL Library homework. There is no Score, but you will see a pen notification on your dashboard if there is feedback. Click on the pen to see your teacher's feedback.

8. I forgot my username or password. What can I do?

Ask your teacher to check your username in his or her My Students list. Your teacher can reset your password there and tell you what it is. Log in with this new temporary password. Then go to My Profile and choose Change Password.

9. How do I ask more questions about Ellii?

You can write a question in the Comments. If it’s about using Ellii digital as a student, I will approve your question and answer it.

I'm a teacher who just started using the digital content. One of my students' work had a feedback space in the results of a q & a. How did this happen? Only his had it! It was great because I could write a few notes for him. Did he request it?

Hi Stephanie! You discovered our brand new feature. We haven't announced it yet because we plan on making a few small fixes first. The feedback feature is currently only available in our open-ended question (writing) task type. When you see this type of homework from your students, you can rate questions and leave feedback. Your students will then see your feedback on their own dashboard. We'll do an announcement and post about this new feature as soon as it's finalized. We're also working on some other feedback tools.

    Stephanie V.(Teacher)

Thanks Tara - that's great! And now I see it in my other students' results too!

Also - do the students see the suggested answers?

    Reply to Comment

    Tarateacher T.(Teacher)

Hi Stephanie. That's a great question. The students do see the Suggested Answers, and I think some teachers might want to moderate this. Do you agree? The original Suggested Answer was meant to work like an Answer Key for teachers. It's a quick way to show a suggested answer to a student too, but I think teachers may want to have the option to not show it in case they are looking for a different answer. What are your thoughts?

Hi Tara - yes, I think they should, as long as they are seeing them after they have completed the questions. We don't always have time to check each answer and correct them all!

    Reply to Comment

    Meredith P.(Teacher)

I wondered this, too, and agree that students should see the suggested answers after they answer. If they have questions, they can check with the teacher. In some cases, it is much easier for the teacher to provide feedback quickly with the suggested answers in place. Thanks!

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Great. Yes, they can currently see the Suggested Answers instead of a Score. So, even before you leave feedback, they can click on n/a from their Student Dashboards. This will show them their own responses as well as ESL Library's Suggested Answers. Note that we don't add Suggested Answers if the answers will vary greatly or if the responses are based on individual student opinions or experiences.

    Marianne Y.(Teacher)

    Hello,
Regarding the writing sections. There is no 'retry' button on the writing sections (my students just did the Grammar Tests. ) Is there a way for them to reset the writing section or edit what they have written in order to implement the feedback given?

    Reply to Comment

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi Marianne. Thanks for your question! At this time, the retry feature is not yet available for our open-ended questions task. After you give feedback, students can view the results but can't retry the task unless you assign it again, which you can do. We agree this would be a great feature to be able to retry based on the feedback. Do you think the suggested answers should disappear with a retry?

ESL Library works well on all mobile devices and browsers. Let us know if you or your students have any trouble. Thanks!

    Marilyn H.(Teacher)

I have noticed that many of my students are getting incorrect on their quiz questions because they may answer "nouns" instead of the allowable answer of "noun". ESL should allow for the plural of answers (nouns or noun for example). These are not errors. Thanks
    marilyn

    Reply to Comment

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi Marilyn. Yes, this is definitely a problem with our fill-in-the-blanks task types. We currently only allow one exact answer. This is on our to-do list to address. However, for now our writers need to create tasks that only allow one answer. We can improve instructions and examples sometimes to make it very clear how to answer in order to reduce this computerized error. If there is a specific lesson or task that you feel we need to change in order to encourage students to format answers specifically, please do let us know. Thanks!

I am a new member. Is there a ESL library app for students?

    Reply to Comment

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi Salvador! Welcome to ESL Library. The digital platform for students is not an app that students download. You will invite your students to join ESL Library (student accounts are free). Then you can assign digital tasks for your students to do. Here are some Help Docs for you if you're interested in getting started: https://help.ellii.com/category/110-digital-tools

    Tsering M.(Teacher)

Your tutorials are very helpful, thanks very much. I was wondering how I can let my students know that his/her teacher has checked on their assigned homework? I know teacher can see the results but it would be nice for the students to see teacher has checked theirs' too. It would be nice to have feedback section too.

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

Hi there and thank you for the kind words about the tutorials!

We are working to develop a notification system to alert students when they have new homework -- I'll pass along your suggestion of students being notified that their teacher has checked their results. Seems like those two systems would be highly related!

At the moment, students can click on their scores on an assignment and see any feedback that their teacher has left. At the moment, only Open-Ended task types allow for teacher feedback, but we are working to add feedback for more (or possibly all) task types.

Are you suggesting that students have a Results/Feedback section on their page as well? If so, I think that's an interesting idea and I can pass it along!

    Bahar H.(Teacher)

How can students join more than one class? Do they need to sign up for each class?

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Bahar,
If you have a student in one class on ESL Library and you'd like to invite them to another of your ESL Library classes, you just need to create your new class (Class Prep --> My Classes --> New Class). Then, scroll down to the yellow area below and click "Add an Existing Student". You just need to click the checkmark next to their name and they will be added to your class.

If a student has already joined ESL Library for one teacher and needs to join another teacher's class, then they just log in to their ESL Library student account at www.ellii.com/students and then click their name in the top right corner. They will see a "Join a Class" button. The teacher will need to give them the class code for the class they want to join. (The teacher can find the class code by clicking into their class, scrolling to the yellow bar, and clicking "Invite Students with Class Code".)

    I hope this helps!

Why some students appear in a class more than once.

    Thank you

    Elena

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Elena,

Sometimes students "Sign Up" every time they go to do homework (instead of using the "Log In" option) -- and they register for multiple student accounts.

We recently updated our www.ellii.com/students page so that students choose the correct option. But make sure that your students are not choosing to "sign up" repeatedly :)

If you have duplicated students on your student list, you can delete the "extra" students -- make sure to choose the version of the student that hasn't done any homework yet! (And if they've done homework on multiple versions of themself, you may just need to write the scores on a piece of paper so you don't delete them when you delete the extra student accounts).

If you think there is a different issue going on, please use the "Contact Us" link at the very bottom of this page and send us an email. We can have someone look into your specific account and see if there is another issue.

Hello. How can my students delete a second (or third or fourth) account they accidentally created? Thanks!

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Angela,

At the moment there is no way for students to delete their own accounts.

However, as a teacher you have two options:

    1) If you simply want to remove a duplicate student from your student list, log in to your teacher account → click the Class Prep drop-down menu → select My Classes. Beneath your My Classes, you will see your complete list of students (My Students) .

Click on the three dots (on the far right) next to the student you'd like to delete. Click Delete Student. In this case, the student account will continue to exist, but the student will no longer be connected to your teacher account or any classes.

    2) If you would like to have a duplicate student account completely deleted from the ESL Library site, please use the Contact Us form (at the very bottom, in the footer of this website) and let us know the email address / user names of the students that you'd like us to delete.

Please note that if we delete the student account from ESL Library, all records of the digital tasks that the student has completed will be deleted (including for any other instructors the student might have). We do have the ability to see if the student is connected to any other teachers, but it is helpful if you are sure that the account should be deleted before you contact us.

    I hope this helps!

    Valerie S.(Teacher)

I am a teacher using ESL Lib with Google Classroom. I post the ESL Lib digital assignments in GC. I can see in ESL Lib that the work has been completed, but my students are having trouble attaching their completed assignments in GC. So, in GC the assignment is not showing as completed. Are we doing something wrong or is this just not possible?

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Valerie,

This is our first stage of Google Classroom integration, so unfortunately results (including student completion of digital tasks) do not yet appear in Google Classroom.

This feature will be coming in the future, and I'm going to mention to our development team that we have an additional teacher request for this feature. You are not the only one hoping for this next stage of integration to be released.

But to answer your question, at the moment this is not possible. Teachers (and students) currently need to go into ESL Library to see results from assigned digital tasks.

    Hope this helps!

Yes, you absolutely can assign different tasks to different students! See Step 7 in our Help Doc here for how to assign different tasks to different students with a class: https://help.ellii.com/article/122-how-to-assign-digital-homework

    Happy teaching!

    Adrian V.(Teacher)

Do students receive an email notification when they get new assignments?

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Adrian,

At the moment, students do not receive an email notification when they get a new assignment. We are just beginning to add notification features for teachers (stay tuned for that new site feature coming soon!), so I have mentioned your suggestion to our development team for students as well.

Students will see a little bell icon next to new assignments on their student dashboard (www.ellii.com/students).

At the moment, what most teachers do is either have a set day/time that assignments regularly become available (for example, "Every Monday at 4pm you will have new homework available.") or they tell students during their live (in-person or online) classes that they have new homework.

When teaching with an asynchronous platform (like Google Meet, Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.), teachers post a link to the student dashboard and then let students know they have a new assignment available.

I know that does not exactly address your need, but I hope that helps in the meantime. I agree that an option to alert students of new assignments would be helpful and have passed the suggestion along to our developer team.

Thank you for your feedback and happy teaching!

How can I get worksheets or homework or course. Could someone help me please. I don’t have a teacher and don’t have invite code too. I immediately need to join

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hello Ahmet,

At the moment, you must have a teacher who uses ESL Library to use the site and do worksheets and homework.

I would encourage you to find a tutor or an English class near you (or online!) and you can tell your teacher about ESL Library.

Then, your teacher can give you homework and access to the worksheets.

Good luck with your English studies!

Hello William! Your student may have accidentally created an account from the Teacher page.

For your student to properly create an account, you will need to invite your student via invitation code or email invite. Please view this help doc as it explains both processes:

Hi! Your work should save for an open-ended comprehension question task where you need to write answers. However, if it's a multiple-choice or true or false task, you'll need to go to the end and submit it.
