Teaching Online with ESL Library (Webinars)

March 23, 2020

We will be regularly hosting free webinars to help you teach online.

Hello, Teachers. Hello, Admins.

We know that for so many of you, your schools have suddenly closed. Many of you are now moving your programs online. For those who are only familiar with our printable content and have not used our digital tools before, we are holding a series of free webinars to help you get started.

If you did not hear our previous announcement, we have temporarily upgraded all our Standard plan users to have full access to the digital tools from the Plus plan. This means you can now broadcast interactive tasks on screen-sharing platforms such as Google Hangouts, and you can assign digital homework tasks to all of your students as well.

We want to help you make the best of these tools.

How to Register

Visit our registration page here. Select a date and time, and then enter your email address to reserve a spot. We are accepting 100 attendees per session.

What to Do If All the Sessions Are Full

If all the sessions are full or you are not able to attend the times that we have posted, you will be able to watch a recording of the sessions on our blog. You can also reach out to us to request a private webinar. We are able to do private webinars (for free) provided there are more than 10 teachers in attendance and a convenient time can be agreed upon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a question that didn't get answered at the webinar? Please check our FAQs about Teaching with ESL Library's Digital Tools. You can also browse our Help section.

How do I give students feedback?

Reply to Comment

Tara Benwell(Author)

We are currently working on a feedback feature for our open-ended question task type. It should be ready very soon! After that we'll work on adding a feedback feature for some of the other task types. Until this is ready, you would need to text or email your students with any feedback you have, though they will see their own results on their Student Dashboard.

I have been an ESL teacher since the 1980's and learned about your website when I started teaching at REEP (Arlington Education and Employment Program). Your website is by far one of the best I have ever used. I love the topics you choose and the detail you give to your lesson plans. I also love that you make your website very personal and that we know who the authors are! Thank you so much for allowing us to use your more advanced package rather than the standard one during this stressful time. How generous and kind of you. I have a question about commenting on students' work when they do a writing or take one of the quizzes? Is there anything through your website? Thank you.

I teach adult ESL PreLit and I’m not tech savvy.
Where do I begin? I’d like to send my students some
Thing to keep them interested in the basic lessons we had covered earlier in class ie family, time, filling out a form, dates in letters and numbers etc.

Hi Mary. To start, you need to create a class and get your students set up. Here is a video demo on How to Create Classes and Invite Students: https://help.ellii.com/article/191-video-how-to-create-classes-and-invite-students

After that, you'll need to find content to send your students. Look for the digital icon. Here is a Help Doc on how to assign digital tasks: https://help.ellii.com/article/122-how-to-assign-digital-homework.

We hope this helps you get started! Best of luck!

Hi there, I notice that I show double versions of my students. So it appears in one version that he/she's done a task but in the other version (same name, same username) hasn't completed anything. It makes for double everything on the screen. Any way to handle this? Do you know what it is happening? I'm new to this. Thanks so much.

Hello! As a subscriber you are permitted to download the student PDF and email it to your students. We recommend using the digital versions where they exist as this is a better experience. However, not all of our lessons have a digital version yet so sometimes you will need to screenshare the PDF or email it (if you want them to have a copy). Thanks!

As a teacher, I’m considering using your online teaching options. What personal information to you collect from my students? How do you use this information. Do you dialogue with my students? Do you advertise your or 3rd party products with my students? Do you share their personal information with others? If you have answers to my questions in a digital form, pls give me a link for it. If not, I would like some assurance that you will not use or share this information for anything outside of the students learning English.

Thank you for making your digital tools available during this time.

I have wondered how to keep my students motivated and learning English.

Having looked at other online tools, price, help, and ease of use, they did not answer my need as a private ESL teacher, who had successfully used ESL Library for several years.

I’m excited to be provided with the tools and opportunity to learn how I can continue to teach my adult students.

Thank you.

Blerina R.(Teacher)

I've a question please. I've been one of your members for quite sometimes and printed tones of materials for my students, back when we used to teach in a classroom.
The problem im having with ESL library right now is that, when i email my students one of your lesson plans, they aren't able to edit it. I need them to edit it so they can fill in the answers. I need to let you know that some of my students don't have a computer, nor an Ipad.
Google classroom is nice and helpful but some of them don't really know how to use this new technology.
This distance learning has become a real challenge for all of us.

Tara B(Ellii Staff)

Hello, Blerina. This is a real challenge. Do your students have mobile phones? All of our digital tasks can be done on a mobile phone. Not all of our printables have been digitized yet, but we have 800+ lessons that are ready to use on mobile. I recommend coming to our next webinar to learn more about our digital tasks. (The PDFs are not editable for copyright reasons.)

Does ESL Library sync well with Google Classroom?

Reply to Comment

Tara Benwell(Author)

We are working towards a plan for integrating with learning platforms like Google Classroom, but we are not set up for this quite yet. What you can do is post a link to ellii.com/students on any platform you're using and then notify students that they have ESL Library homework to complete. After logging in, your students will see their homework on their ESL Library Student Dashboard.

Hi, my students cannot see my assignments. After they have joined the class, do they need the passcode again? How do I find that if I need it again?

Reply to Comment

Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi. No they do not need the passcode again. They need to go to ellii.com/students and log in (yellow box). Then they enter the username and password they chose when they signed up with the code. This will take them to their Student Dashboard where they will see homework. They will always log in this way. Excellent! Now go to the top navigation and click on My Classes. Choose your class. If there are results to see, you can click on them. Also, from My Classes you should see Pending Invitations. You can resend the invitation that your student was unable to use. Tell your student to check his/her spam folder if it's not there. Also, if your student sees a purple screen that says the invitation doesn't exist, they may have already signed up. Some students try to sign up again the second time they come to the site instead of logging in.

Hello, Tsering. You can go to the lesson (e.g., search for Distracted Driving) and click on Assign Tasks. Then cancel the assignment you want to cancel. To encourage your students to complete the tasks you would need to send a group email or use another messaging platform. ESL Library doesn't currently offer a messaging service with students. We do have this in the plans! A lot of teachers use Google Classroom. They put a note on Google Classroom that says something like this: "Remember to log in to your ESL Library account to do your homework: ellii.com/students. Your next lesson is due April 10."

Hi Vimala. For most tasks they should be able to Try Again from their dashboard. For the Open-Ended Question type, they can't access the task again unless you reassign it. They will need to wait for your feedback and then they can view it. Ask them to log in at ellii.com/students to see their dashboard to start a task or try a task again.

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi Lynda. Here is an answer from our FAQ: https://ellii.com/blog/faq-teachers
We are currently researching integration with platforms such as Google Classroom. At this time, we recommend adding the link to ellii.com/students on Google Classroom and letting students know (via Google Classroom or any messaging service you use with them) that you've added a new ESL Library assignment. Students will log in and see their homework on their own individual Student Dashboard.
We'll be working on integration tools this summer if not before. Thanks!

Is there an option to have students do a quiz or flashcards from your site from within Zoom as the live class is going on?

    Reply to Comment

    Tara Benwell(Author)

Hi Vanessa! You would need to assign your class the task and then each student would need to log in and do it on their own devices. Depending how big your class is, it can work well (with a large class it may be too tricky to manage and you're probably better to stick with facilitating the task on your shared screen and asking for answers).

Until then, please remind your existing students to "log in" rather than "sign up" after they create an account: https://ellii.com/blog/students-sign-up-log-in

I have been a member of your site for many years and love using its materials to supplement my ELLS.
Since we are now teaching remotely, I would love to implement these digital tools for my students. My school district has placed many restrictions on apps that can be loaded and websites that can be visited on to student ipads. Is there a way to download the digital lessons and assign them without student passwords?

    Reply to Comment

    Tara B(Ellii Staff)

Hi Angela. Right now, you can do the tasks together in a class by broadcasting the tasks for your students using a shared screen. If you want the students to work individually, they need accounts (they don't need email). Without a student account, there would be no way for a teacher to see results of the students or to save the results. For now we are focused on building tools where teachers can monitor how students are doing. We are considering a practice mode that would allow for this, though. Thanks for your request!

Hello, I'm thinking of joining ESL in order to teach my granddaughter English. We communicate through FaceTime. Can we interact and do the lessons together on the Net? Can we both listen to an audio exercice together for example.?
    Thanks for your help.

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

Hi Kathleen! You can use ESL Library with any platform with a "screen-sharing" function (which would allow your granddaughter to see what's on your screen). I'm not a Facetime expert, but I believe it does have a screen-sharing function, so that should work just fine for you guys.

I would strongly recommend registering for our "Teach Online with ESL Library" on-demand webinar (see original blog post for link to registration page). The webinar is about an hour long, but you can watch it at your convenience with a favorite beverage in hand. It will really give you a great sense of what you can do -- you can some examples of types of activities on the site. We have lots of one-on-one tutors who use our site with great success, so I imagine it would work wonderfully with your granddaughter as well!

Also, if you do decide to dive in and try a subscription -- you can always email us if it's not working out for you. We can help answer questions or figure out a good solution.

    Happy family bonding to you!

Hi Pratima, you can register for our upcoming live and on-demand webinars here: https://app.livestorm.co/esllibrary

The live webinars have a live chat area and Questions tab, so you can communicate with ESL Library staff or other teachers around the world. The on-demand webinars contain similar content (just without the live chat/Q&A).

For our live webinars, use the drop-down menu to choose the best date/time for you (please note timezones). If your desired webinar is full, keep checking back. We usually schedule new webinars at the end of the week :)

    Hi Karen,

We do not offer free trials to individual instructors, however, due to the COVID crisis, we are offering discounted and donated subscriptions to programs and schools on a case-by-case basis.

You can have your program/school administrator reach out to us at hello@ellii.com and we'll be happy to find a solution for you.

The other option, if you teach individually, is you can always pay for a month to try out the site and if it doesn't work for you, you can email us and we will happily refund. All Standard Plans are currently being upgraded to Plus Plans through at least June 30th, due to COVID, so if you register for the Standard, you will have access to try out the full extent of our digital tools.

    I hope that helps!

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Veronica,

You can go to the main drop-down menu "Class Prep" --> "Results". Click on the Lesson you assigned so you can see all tasks that were assigned. Click on the due date for the task. It will take you to the page where you can change the due date or (to the right of the due date area) click the "Cancel Assignment" X. Click "Save"!

**Please note that if you Cancel an Assignment, the task will no longer be assigned to students and all student Results for that task will disappear.

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Rakesh,

ESL Library is developed with ESL teachers in mind, but we have many tutors who use the site. I think it would be accessible for a parent to use with a child as part of home learning -- although I would recommend exploring our How-To Videos first (https://help.ellii.com/collection/1-how-to-videos) to get a sense of how you can use the site!

If you want to assign digital homework and keep track of your student's results, then you might consider our Plus Plan. But if you are planning to do the work together, or just let your child use your "teacher" account to do tasks (without needing to record your child's results), then you are probably just fine with our Standard plan. You can read more about the two plans here on our Pricing page: https://ellii.com/pricing

    Happy learning!

Can I delete a lesson that I host for students? I'll appreciate a prompt response.

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Mrinal,

ESL Library does not have a platform to "host" lessons. We provide ready-made lesson plans and activities/resources that you can use with your students. If you use a platform like Zoom/Google Meet (with a screen-sharing feature), then you can also host an online class with your students and use ESL Library materials to teach.

If you'd like to learn more about teaching online with ESL Library, I recommend joining one of our upcoming live or on-demand webinars. The live webinars have an active chat/questions area, as well as a live Q&A session at the end. The on-demand webinars can be watched any time at your convenience (without the live chat/Q&A).

Good job making a student account!

If you have a class code from your teacher, then go to www.ellii.com/students Log in to your account. Then, click on your name in the top right corner. Click on "Join a Class". You can add your class code there.

If you don't have a class code, then you need to ask your teacher for it. When you have the class code, go to www.ellii.com/students log into your account, and then you can click on your name, click "Join Class" and enter the class code.

If you need more help, you can watch this video: https://ellii.com/blog/students-join-with-class-code

Do you think there may be a case for moving from the dominant portrait document format to a landscape world? That way the print format handouts would become immediately usable as screen shares without the need to scroll. Just a thought!

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi there Ralph,

Hmmmm, an interesting suggestion! I'm not sure if our publishing team has discussed that one or not, but I'll pass along the idea.

I do know that we've been trying to shift all of our lessons over to digital format as quickly as possible, so that screen-sharing each task can be done in a more interactive and engaging way as digital tasks, but of course if students have a physical handout in class and an instructor wants to share a similar-appearing PDF, that doesn't address the issue.

I'm wondering how a shift to landscape might affect the size of text and activities (since portrait mode tends to fill the screen of the device it's on). At this point, I'm just idly wondering.

Let me pass this thought on to our developers and head of publishing -- and thanks for sharing your idea!

Hi, new here and new to online delivery; missed the March webinar...is there another one coming up?

My question concerns logistics of delivering lessons synchronously: 1. are lessons delivered within the platform here on esllibrary/com or do teachers use Skype/zoom etc? 2. If delivery is done via skype/zoom, how is simultaneous viewing/listening achieved; is there a share screen option, or otherwise, or are ss encouraged to prepare in advance as in a flipped classroom model?

    Thanks in advance,

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Jo,

Yes, you can register for our upcoming live and on-demand webinars here: https://app.livestorm.co/esllibrary

    1. For a synchronous lesson, you will need a third-party platform like Zoom/Skype etc. to use in conjunction with ESL Library.

    2. This is the primary focus of the webinar, so check it out.

But here's how you do it: While in Zoom (or whichever platform), you will want to click the screen-share button inside Zoom. Then, just navigate to ellii.com and log into your teacher account and go to a lesson you like. Click over to the Digital tab and click on a task type. You will need to elicit responses from students and click the buttons for them. (There are other ways to do activities with your students which are covered in the webinar, as well.)

You can either do activities together as a class using screen-share (in the more traditional method) or assign digital tasks/reading/listening to your students in advance, then review tasks via screen-share during a live class (in the flipped classroom model). So many options -- it just depends on your teaching needs and students' needs :)

I was wondering how you would recommend using this on Zoom?

Do I screenshare everything? Or is it better if I ask them to log in and complete the tasks?

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi William,

I'd recommend joining one of our upcoming live or on-demand webinars, Teach Online with ESL Library. We cover this topic in the webinar in detail. You can register here: https://app.livestorm.co/esllibrary

But as a short answer, I would probably use a combination of the two. I would assign homework for students to do within their own accounts, and then do a live lesson with screensharing via Zoom. During the live screenshare, we could review homework tasks or do additional, related tasks together.

If you'd like more details, be sure to check out the webinar :)

    Hablemos F.(Teacher)

I am sharing with the PRO version of Zoom, and the ESL Library Plus Plan and they work seamlessly together. I usually download the Teachers Version, and the student's version after assigning the lesson to the class. I then scroll down to the picture cards and flip the lesson so the students are able to see the picture cards correctly. This allows me to set the context of the lesson and at the same time elicit the target language. Should the digital version not include the picture cards to the lexical items I tend to write them down and look for them on ESL Library myself. They have almost everything you could think of in a picture card. And if for some reason I am not able to find what I am looking for I search for a similar image and just edit the text on the flashcard to match my target language. After eliciting the target language from the teacher's version I then share my screen to show the students the (Student Version) of the task I want them to work on. I model the first two tasks with the students so they have a clear idea of what is expected from them. The communicative tasks from ESL Library work perfectly in breakout rooms. You just have to make sure you set the tasks just right and that you give clear ICQ's. Since all of the tasks are scaffolded one with the other it allows students to understand even more. I would like to add that all of my students are EFL learners and not ESL learners. Nevertheless, as an educator, I adapt my lessons to my student's needs. ESL Library in my opinion is the best thing that has happened to the ELT community thus far.

I was wondering what happens to the digital files I have saved. Will I still have access to them after June 30? My students want to review the lessons over the summer months will they be able to do this or will I have to save the lessons as printable lessons.
    Thanks Karen

    Hi Karen,

I wanted to start off by letting you know that if you're a current subscriber as of June 30th, you will likely receive an extended upgrade until the end of summer.
Ben, our CEO, is discussing the specifics of that with our developers right now and should be making an announcement here on the blog within the next week or so. I just wanted to let you know that, while I don't have the answers for you right now, I spoke with Ben about your question this morning and he said he'll be posting something about it shortly.

I can say that teachers and students will have access to their results (to see how they did on digital tasks) and, as a general reminder, our Read & Listen tasks will remain available to all subscribers so that students can get indepedent reading and listening practice "outside" of class.

I know that doesn't answer all of your questions, but keep your eyes peeled for Ben's upcoming announcement with more details.

Hello dear you ! I've been working as a self - employed teacher for quite a while , but at the moment I'm going through such a tough time as I lost my students and I have to start from scratch. To be sincere, I do not know how to adapt my lessons online and also, I do not have a proper material . Is there anything you could recommend to help me overcome my struggles ? I think I would be able to teach any level online ! . Many Thanks
Look forward to hearing from you

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Marly,

I'm sorry to hear about your current struggles. There are lots of options for adapting your lessons online. I would start by finding a live screen-sharing platform, such as Zoom or Google Meet (two very popular options). Remember that you can scan (or even just take photos with your phone) of your favorite printed lesson plans and then have a digital copy of them. You can then use the platform like Zoom, Google Meet, etc. to share and discuss those lessons live with your students.

If you don't have the option to teach "live" with your students, consider an asynchronous platform (like Google Classroom) that you can use with your students. Or even emailing back and forth with them is an option.

Of course, if you're using ESL Library, then we have lots of options for you. I would strongly recommend attending one of our "Teach Online with ESL Library" webinars. They are about an hour long, and we cover how to teach with live screensharing platforms or asynchronously using ESL Library.

You can absolutely teach any level online and although there's a learning curve for students and teachers, it's worth learning!

You can register for our upcoming live and on-demand webinars here: https://app.livestorm.co/esllibrary

Live webinars have an active chat area where you can ask questions of other teachers around the world and a questions area where you can ask the ESL Library team questions. We also have a live Q&A at the end. On-demand webinars can be viewed at any time, but do not have the live chat/questions/Q&A.

I hope this helps. And happy teaching to you!

    Hola Silvia,

Nuestra plataforma ayuda a los maestros a enseñar inglés y es completamente en inglés. Para usar ESL Library como un estudiante, es necesario que un maestro le invite a su clase con un "class code".

    ¡Buena suerte con sus estudios!

Hi, I have a teacher account. When I use the digital version of a lesson plan and do an acitivty with a student, we check the answers together by clicking on 'finish'. It then says, 'Well done, Jen!' This is not directed at the student and implies that I have a student account when I am actually using the programme to teach others. I think this should be rectified.

How do I broadcast a digital lesson (share my screen) to more than one student at a time using ZOOM? Christine Livingstone

    Reply to Comment

    Tammy Wik(Ellii Staff)

    Hi Christine,

I would recommend registering for our On-Demand Webinar, "Teaching Online with ESL Library". At about 6 minutes in, I show exactly how you can use Zoom to broadcast digital lessons. You can register here and view at your convenience: https://app.livestorm.co/esllibrary

However, the basic idea is that you'll want to open Zoom (with all of your students also in your Zoom meeting). Click on the "Share Screen" button in Zoom and choose to share your entire screen.

At that point, your students will be able to see anything that is on your computer screen. Go to ellii.com and log in to your teacher account. Go to the lesson you want to broadcast with your students. Click over the "Digital" side of the lesson and click into a digital activity. Your students will be able to see what you do on screen and you will need to elicit responses from your students and, typically, do the clicking of correct answers yourself.

The on-demand webinar I referred to above goes into much more detail about how you can run these online classes with broadcasting.

    Happy teaching!
